Greer v. Dowling
About the Case:
Travis Greer, a Messianic Jew in an Oklahoma State prison, was removed from the prison’s kosher diet program because prison officials mistakenly thought he had consumed non-kosher food. The prison forced Mr. Greer to eat a non-kosher diet, in violation of his faith, for 120 days. Mr. Greer filed suit and, after the Tenth Circuit remanded the case to the district court for further proceedings, the Religious Freedom Clinic got involved as Mr. Greer’s counsel.
Together with co-counsel, clinic students drafted an amended complaint asserting claims for violation of Mr. Greer’s federal and state religious freedom rights. After further proceedings, clinic students also represented Mr. Greer at a court-supervised mediation, where they helped draft and negotiate settlement terms that both restored Mr. Greer’s religious freedom rights and created lasting policy changes that will ensure better access to religious meals for prisoners across the state of Oklahoma.
