Jehovah’s Witnesses v. State of Norway

Case Name:

Jehovah’s Witnesses v. State of Norway,

Case Status: Ongoing

Court: Borgarting Court of Appeal

Clinic Involvement: Amicus

About the Case:

The Religious Freedom Clinic has joined with the Center for Law and Religious Freedom at Jagiellonian University, Krakow to defend the rights of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Norway.

Like many European states, Norway officially recognizes the various religions its people practice and extends special protections and benefits to those faiths. After recognizing the Jehovah’s Witnesses for decades, Norway withdrew official recognition because it disagrees with the Witnesses’ longstanding religious practices.

European and Norwegian law protect the Witnesses from being singled out for their beliefs: official recognition can depend only on which religions Norwegians chose to practice, not on which religions the Norwegian state prefers. The Witnesses’ case is pending before the Borgarting Court of Appeal. The Clinic and the Jagiellonian Center have filed a letter in their support.
